Under the Same Moon

Under the Same Moon proved to be an insightful and intriguing lesson in perseverance and devotion.  Carlitos the son in the movie showed strong devotion and perseverance in his quest to be reconnected with his mother.  He showed devotion in that he was willing to do all he could to get to the U.S. to be reunited with his mother, even using his savings of money to get his way over the border.  His character was impressive in several areas of the film.  First, was his devotion and love for his grandmother as he cared for her while she was ill. Secondly, he showed strong character as he made his way to L.A., being very personable and outgoing with people he met along the way.  I was impressed by the way he introduced himself to the members of the band in the van. He displayed great maturity in that situation by "winning" the band over by sharing his life story.  A third way that he displayed strong character and perseverance was when he and Enrique were trying to find work.  He went into the restraunt,  secured a job with food and lodging not only for himself but for his friend Enrique as well.  Carlitos persistent character was evident as he continued to search for his mother, trying to find the phone that she may have used to call him.  I found his devotion to his mother and perseverance in finding her to be the most touching and profound aspect of the film.  Carlitos showed wisdom and maturity way beyond his nine years in his quest to be reunited with his mother.

  1. Becky, I enjoyed this movie also. I found it to be very touching and heartfelt. The love that Carlito had for a mother that he has not seen for 4 years but only spoken with on the phone is immeasurable. I believe what is shown a great deal in this film along with perseverance is the importance of family to the Spanish culture. For a mother to travel to the United States without her young child to search for a better life for them and not see them for years but still send money to help them shows great family values. Family gatherings in the Spanish culture are very important as shown in this film during a birthday party, and even when Rosario didn't marry Paco they had a celebration with friends. We all learned a great deal of the Spanish culture during this film. Hard work and perseverance, along with a strong family bonds are all evident in this film.

  2. I agree that Carlitos showed a lot of perseverence, along with a strong character. Despite not having seen his mother for years, the fear of having to live with his Aunt and Uncle, and the loss of his grandmother, Carlitos decides on a course of action and follows it singlemindedly. He showed a lot of courage when he contacted the coyotes to take him across the border despite Nona Carmen's contempt for them. Thoughout his travels, he is not thinking just of himself, but also of others such as Enrique.
I thought that it was a very grown-up action when after talking with his Father about taking him to L.A, that he paid for both their meals with his hard earned money. Most kids would automatically expect their parents to pay for them. I also really enjoyed this film!

  3. Gary,
Thanks for your response to the blog. I was impressed as well with the aspect of the strong family connections portrayed in the film. I found it interesting as you did that the party went on even though Rosario decided not to marry Paco. This film definantely showed the strong love for family that the Hispanic people have.
